Alba Pratalia is a riddle, written in early 900 CE, that allegorizes writing through a rustic image: the writer's fingers, like patient oxen, lead the instrument of his craft; the white quill, like a plough, draws regular lines on the virgin, white parchment, and in those fertile furrows the ink, like a precious seed, is laid down to generate knowledge.
Understanding the allegory thus allows the riddle to be solved, indicating the subject of all actions in the writing hand and, in Alba Pratalia, the blank sheets of paper that the writer will go to mark.
